Greece sees a massive increase in British COVID-19 strain

COVID-19 cases doubled on Tuesday to 842 after the number of daily tests increased to over 30,000, giving authorities a bigger picture of the outbreak, and there is a fear of the British strain running rife.

The health department also announced 21 deaths in the last 24 hours and the number of COVID-19 patients intubated in hospitals across the country has decreased to 283.

The death toll has reached 5,692 and the total cases stand at 153,226.

Tuesday’s data comes as a shock after a constant decrease in daily infections in the last few days and is the largest number of daily cases recorded in the last 15 days.

At the same time, scientists were going over suspected cases of the British strain with the president of the National Public Health Organization (EODY), Panagiotis Arkoumaneas.

Panagiotis Arkoumaneas.

Arkoumaneas did not hide his concern to SKAI about a possible pandemic surge in the near future.

He said that up until Tuesday morning, 59 cases of the British strain had been detected in Athens and Crete, and that suspected cases had a high chance of being confirmed in Northern Greece.

There is some evidence that a new COVID-19 variant first identified in southeast England carries a higher risk of death than the original strain.

In Greece, 18,406 vaccinations were made on Tuesday, raising the total number of those that have received their first dose of the vaccine to 182,778.
