Two doctors killed in avalanche on Mount Olympus

Two doctors from Larissa lost their lives when they were swept away by an avalanche while climbing Mount Olympus.

Telemachus Zafeiridis, a physician and Theodoros Hatzopoulos, an anesthesiologist, worked on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic at the General Hospital of Larissa.

A search and rescue mission was launched by the Fire Brigade after a third member of the party managed to escape the snow and alerted authorities about the incident.

Their bodies have been transferred to the hospital where they worked at.

The director of the ICU Apostolos Komnos told Protothema: "Not only did Larissa loose two amazing doctors and people, but also the whole wider area. Telemachus was a doctor in our department and Theodoros with the second wave of the coronavirus had been transferred to the ICU and helped a lot of people...None of us can believe it."

Both doctors had a passion for skilling. As Komnos explained, they were on a break from their duty.  "Their leave was in the winter so they could enjoy their hobby. Telemachus was also a ski teacher, as far as I know he was not a beginner. Telemachus leaves behind three children and Theodoros one child, all minors."
