The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens entered the top 200 in a global ranking.

As the rector of EKPA Thanos Dimopoulos said:

"The success of the National and Kapodistrian University is a consequence of the internationalisation and extroversion strategy that has been implemented in recent years and is bearing fruit.

"This makes the institution an internationally recognized research oriented university, which develops important research collaborations of high performance and international recognition."

EKPA went up 53 places to 180th worldwide among 12,000 Universities.

This ranking is compiled by Cybermetrics, a unit of the Spanish National Research Council, which is the main research institute in Spain.

It provides information on more than 28,000 universities based on their online presence and the impact of their research work.

Based on its results, after EKPA is the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which fell just short of entering the top 200 by being ranked 205.

The National Technical University of Athens is ranked 329, the University of Patras is ranked 533 and the University of Ioannina is ranked 581.

This ranking includes about 12,000 Universities worldwide out of 30,000 in which data was collected.

It is considered one of the most valid rankings in the world because it is based on data that is directly verifiable on the internet, and not on indicators that rely heavily on interviews, questionnaires and opinion polls, which in many cases are bias or subjective.

The ranking has been published twice a year since 2004.
