Church of Agia Paraskevi in Chalkida is being restored

The church of Agia Paraskevi, considered the protectress of Evia’s capital city Halkida, will be restored.

Earlier this week, Greece's Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, Central Greece Region Governor Fanis Spanos and Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Chalkida, signed a cultural development program.

In 1921, the Holy Temple of Agia Paraskevi in Halkida was declared a "Byzantine monument."

"The services of the Ministry of Culture have been working for several years in order to restore the damages, as well as the original form of the monument. Agia Paraskevi dominates not only in the area of the city of Chalkida, but also in the heart of its inhabitants," Mendoni said.

"An important project enters its final stage," she added.

The project "Restoration of the Holy Temple of Agia Paraskevi in Halkida" has a budget of €4,700,000.

It will be funded by the Public Investment Program of the Region of Central Greece and will be supervised by the Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments.

"The Holy Church of Agia Paraskevi, apart from being the patron saint of Halkida, is the most important surviving medieval monument of the city and one of the most prominent of the Frankish period in Greece," said Spanos.

On his part, Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Chalkida stated: "I want to express my gratitude to Mrs. Mendoni, who showed great interest and great love and came personally several times to see things up close."

" I would also like to express my gratitude to our Regional Governor, Mr. Spanos, who from the first moment he took office, gave priority to the work of Agia Paraskevi. In fact, he was willing with the whole Regional Council to finance this project," he added.
