Crews 'work around the clock' to restore power following snowstorm

Deputy Civil Protection Minister for Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias expressed his belief that by midnight 90% of snowstorm damage to the power networks, will be restored.

Heavy snowfall causes problems across Attica

The beautiful snow blanketed the Acropolis and other ancient monuments in Athens, but it also caused electricity cuts and disrupted road traffic and public transportation.

The weather also halted COVID-19 vaccinations.

Hardalias met with Armed Forces, Fire Brigade and agency representatives at the Fire Brigade's 'Olympus' mobile operations center stationed at the junction of Thisseos and Dionyssou Avenue in Ekali, earlier in the day.

13,000 homes in North Attica were left without power, he noted.

In Evia, "we had to reinstall a new network from other sources, because the current one was wiped out," the minister said.

Regarding Crete, Hardalias stressed that:

"they had the misfortune today of two high voltage lines... The whole of Sitia was out of power for a few hours with winds reaching 11 on the Beaufort scale- because that is the reality. Power on the island has been restored."

"Nobody is taking a break, nobody is sleeping tonight, nobody is accepting substitutes, we shall all remain here, as we did last night (Tuesday), until the last neighborhood, the most remote neighborhood of Athens gets its power back," he continued.
