The President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Sunday "honoured all who contributed to incorporating Ioannina to the nation - the volunteers, the rebels, the officers, and the plain soldiers."
February 21 marks the day in 1913 when Ioannina was liberated from the Ottoman troops.
To commemorate the 108th anniversary, Sakellaropoulou attended events in the capital of Epirus.
At the Memorial of Bizani Fighters, named after the town near Ioannina where the decisive battle took place, she laid a wreath.
"Their example inspires us. It reminds us that forts fall when we fight with solidarity and faith. And it invites us to look worthy of them, preserving the freedom they have given us, fulfilling the ideals for which they sacrificed," she concluded.
