Former Socceroo defender Tony Popovic has become the latest Australian coach axed by a European club.
Greek second division team Xanthi sacked the ex-Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory coach after less than 9 league games at the helm.
Popovic joined the club, owned by Greek-Australian businessman Bill Papas, after the 2020-21 A-League campaign after leading the Glory to back-to-back finals series.
The reason for his sacking is current not known.
Xanthi is currently fifth in the Super League 2, but only four points behind top placed Ergotelis and have a game in hand.
Xanthi owner Papas, said: “I want to thank Tony for the excellent work he has offered to the team since September 2020 when he took office.
“With great sadness and respect for Tony, we announce the end of our partnership.
“I wish Tony and his family all the best for the future.”
Popovic’s sacking comes after the club’s goalkeeper coach, former Socceroos goalkeeper Zeljko Kalac left Xanthi and another Australian coach, Kevin Muscat, was axed by Belgian club Sint-Truiden
Under the Australian coach's watch, Xanthi's squad included a small contingent of players from Down Under.
These were Popovic’s sons Kristian and Gabriel, former Sydney FC and Melbourne City midfielder Josh Brillante, ex-Adelaide United goalkeeper Paul Izzo and former Western Sydney defender Matt Jurman.
