Greece considers opening borders to vaccinated British tourists from May

British tourists who have received the covid-19 vaccine may be allowed into Greece from as early as May.

Earlier this week, Boris Johnson announced that foreign holidays could be permitted from 17 May under his road map out of lockdown.

After his announcement, international holiday bookings surged by as much as 600%.

Ryanair, easyJet, TUI and Thomas Cook reported a jump in bookings to destinations including Greece, Spain and Turkey.

Athens is seeking to boost the country's vital holiday industry, which has taken a hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to The Times, government officials are considering plans to allow in British visitors who can prove that they have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in time for the summer months, while implementing their own programme to give airport workers and resort staff the vaccine.

Meanwhile, EU leaders will meet on Thursday to discuss the idea of the 'vaccination passports'.

Two weeks ago, Greece and Israel agreed on a “green passport” for tourism.
