Oily, acne-prone, shiny?
If you have any of these skin types then you should keep reading.
Many people with oily and acne-prone skin stop wearing foundation because they believe it blocks their pores and produces more spots.
In the majority of cases, this is true as most foundations on the market (high end and drugstore) are filled with myriads of pore-clogging ingredients and all matter of ‘fillers’.
But fear not, if you have oily and acne-prone skin, you don’t have to fear foundation!
You just need the right products, and by that, I mean non-comedogenic products.
If you want to prevent acne from forming, all your products must be non-comedogenic.
We will go into that further down the track. For now, let’s stick to foundations.
If you want affordable but effective skin coverage, then check out the following foundations. They’re the best of the best.
1. Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation (My favourite)
Maybelline’s Fit Me line has been a long-time cult favourite by makeup lovers and makeup artists.
I have been using this foundation on my clients for nearly 5 years and it NEVER disappoints!
I use it on oily and combination skin types and set with powder. The Matte + Poreless liquid foundation is among the brand’s most raved products, and for good reason.
This foundation, for its price, is arguably the same if not better than many luxury foundations.
Anybody can pick up a bottle of this magic skin-perfector for under $20.
This lightweight foundation is best applied with a small kabuki brush or semi-damp sponge and it dries with a seamless matte finish.
Its ingredients include micro-powders that control oil and shine. It helps conceal visible pores and uneven skin texture like acne scars.
The best part of this foundation? It has a fabulously wide range of shades. A total of 40 shades to be exact. You can choose one, or combine two shades to get your perfect base. I recommend buying 2 or 3 shades, as our skin changes colour in winter and summer.
Top tip: this foundation provides medium coverage, so you can apply as little or as much as you like.
I always recommend starting with a base layer and adding more if you need. Buy here.
2. BareMinerals Original Loose Powder Foundation SPF 15
Just because this is a powder foundation, doesn’t mean less coverage! Quite the opposite. I first got my hands on this in New York a few years back and I fell in love with the way it didn’t feel like anything was on my skin, meanwhile, the coverage was unbelievable!
All of my spots and skin texture were blurred away with the stroke of a brush.
It’s currently the #1 mineral foundation in the USA.
This is a loose powder and they’re usually used for setting your makeup and eliminating shine from your face.
But it’s also a foundation, and that is where the magic is. You can keep reapplying it throughout the day for touch-ups and SPF reapplication and protection.
The best part is that it has SPF 15. (You can skip sunscreen).
The SPF 15 works immediately upon application.
BareMinerals assures that its ingredients are clean enough to even fall asleep in. The powder causes no damage to the skin, so the more you use it, the healthier your complexion will look. (I don’t recommend sleeping in your makeup).
The foundation comes in 30 shades and is all mineral-based so you can rest assured that it doesn’t cause pore blockages or acne. Buy here.
Top tip: less is more! This powder provides lots of coverage, so don’t get carried away by the fact that it’s a powder. Tap the excess off the big fluffy brush (the bigger the better) before applying with circular motions.
3. Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup Foundation (If you’d like to spend a little more)
This non-comedogenic foundation is best known for being endorsed by famous model and acne sufferer Kendall Jenner.
It’s currently the #1 selling foundation in the USA and Australia.
The best part of this foundation is the fact that it is long-lasting (it can last up to 24 hours without touch-ups) and NOT pore-blocking.
It’s rare to find a product like this.
The formula dries matte and smooth on your skin when applied and is great at controlling shine and oil. It dries fast so try and apply it as fast as you can.
I recommend using a damp beauty blender, and moisturising thoroughly beforehand.
This foundation has medium to full coverage since it’s buildable and blendable.
I wouldn’t recommend more than 1 layer, as its consistency is quite dense. The magic formula conceals skin blemishes and can even out your complexion exceptionally well.
It’s the ideal product if you’re looking to cover acne marks and spots.
My favourite part of this foundation? It’s waterproof AND has SPF 10. So you can wear it to the office, then straight to the beach! Buy here.
Top tip: be sure to double cleanse when wearing this foundation, as it sticks to the skin. Use a gentle cleanser to remove the bulk of the makeup, then something a little stronger (like a Glycolic Cleanser) to completely clean the skin.
