FC Schalke 04 hired Greek Coach Dimitrios Grammozis as its fifth coach of a terrible season on Tuesday.

The 42-year-old Grammozis — a former midfielder with 143 Bundesliga appearances for Hamburger SV, Kaiserslautern and Cologne — signed a contract through to June 2022, the Gelsenkirchen-based club said in a statement.

The German-born Greek coach takes over a team almost certainly heading for the second division.

Schalke is last in the Bundesliga with just one win from 23 rounds so far.

It is nine points from safety with 11 matches remaining.

In a statement, he said he was "really looking forward to this task" despite Schalke having won just one league game and lost 16 of their 23 matches this season.

This is his first coaching job in the Bundesliga, having made 143 appearances in Germany's top flight as a midfielder for Hamburg, Cologne and Kaiserslautern.

The German-born Greek last coached second-division Darmstadt, whom he left at the end of last season after two years.

Schalke have already sacked David Wagner, Manuel Baum and Gross as head coach this season.

Grammozis was born to Greek parents in Wuppertal and grew up in Velbert.

He began his football career in 1984 with local side TuS Neviges in the Velbert neighbourhood district.
