Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes Thessaly

A strong 5.9 earthquake struck central Greece a little after 12pm on Wednesday.

According to revised data by the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake was measured at 5.9 on the Richter scale, and occurred 21 km SW of Elassona in Thessaly and had a focal depth of 10 km.

The quake sent people rushing out of homes and office buildings into the streets in the town of Larissa.

Its epicenter was 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) west-northwest of the town and it struck just after 12:15 p.m. (1015 GMT), according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, which put the preliminary magnitude at 6.2.

The tremor was felt in Athens.

In a phone call with Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu conveyed solidarity to Greece following the earthquake and expressed his country’s readiness to offer support if the need arose, said Greek Foreign Ministry.

Some damage reported in nearby villages, mainly to old buildings with walls collapsing or cracking.

Many aftershocks, including several strong ones, with one having a magnitude of over 5.0.

No injuries were reported.
