Honorary Chair at Alpha Bank, Yannis Costopoulos passes away aged 83

Honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alpha Bank, Yannis Costopoulos passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83.

Costopoulos played a key role in making Alpha Bank one of the largest banks in Greece.

Born in Athens in 1938, Costopoulos received his B.Sc. in Naval Architecture at King’s College, Durham University, England.

He is the grandson of the founder of the Commercial Credit Bank, as Alpha Bank was called when he joined it in 1963.

He served as Managing Director and General Manager of the Bank from 1973 and was Chair of the Board of Directors and General Manager from 1984 to 1996.

From 1996 to 2005 he served as Chair of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of Alpha Bank.

From February 2005 to May 2014 he served as Executive Chair of the Board of Directors of the Bank, while in June 2014 the Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders conferred upon him the title of Honorary Chair of the Board of Directors.

Costopoulos has been described as a “patriarch” by other bankers.
