Thousands of new cars parked at the port of Piraeus

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and zero cruise ship arrivals, China's shipping firm Cosco which operates the port of Piraeus, turned the passenger port into a car terminal.

Under normal conditions, hundreds of thousands of passengers would pass through the Greek port each year.

Instead, the cruise terminal was flooded with new vehicles, specifically more than 1,700 SUVs that arrived from China.

The use of the docks was deemed necessary because of the works currently taking place on a section of an OLP car terminal and because the availability of the rest of the Piraeus car terminal has already been exhausted.

A majority of vehicles will make their way to the Greek market, while a percentage of them will be loaded again on special ships to travel to other destinations.
