Two freighters registered in Liberia and Malta collided for unknown reasons ten nautical miles west of Kithira island, off southern Peloponnese, on Saturday morning. Liberian-flagged 'Kiveli' crashed with its prow midship into 'Afina I', Maltese-registered, taking in water.
No injuries were reported.
Kiveli left Morocco for Bulgaria and has a crew of 24 (1 Georgian, 23 Filipinos) and Afina I left Novorossisk for Bilbao with a team of 18 (16 Georgians, 2 Russians). The Greek Port Authority is in the area with several dinghies, standby ships, and tugboats.
