NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has just announced that the Sydney Opera House will be lit on 25 March to commemorate 200 years of Greek Independence.
The announcement comes after pressure from the Greek Community of NSW and major Greek media outlets including Greek City Times.
2021 is an important milestone for Greece and Greeks around the world.
It marks 200 years since the beginning of the Greek revolution that secured Greece’s independence after centuries of Ottoman Turkish tyranny.
Greeks are the seventh largest ethnic group in Australia, with the number of Greeks and Cypriots in Australia collectively totalling 422,234 people.
Greek immigration to Australia has been one of the largest migratory flows in the history of Australia, especially after World War II and Greek Civil War.
