Greece records 2,785 new Covid-19 cases and 64 casualties on Friday

Greece has confirmed 233,079 infections from the pandemic's start (daily change: +1.2 per cent).

In the confirmed cases of the last seven days, 75 conditions are related to travel from abroad and 2101 to other confirmed cases

The pressure on the national health system is a big challenge. About 4,600 COVID-19 patients are in hospital, more than half of which in the Athens area," Vana Papaevangelou, a member of the committee of infectious disease experts advising the government.

On Friday, health authorities reported 2,785 new coronavirus cases and 64 deaths, bringing total infections to 233,079 since the first case was detected in February last year and COVID-related deaths to 7,361.

Athens accounts for roughly half of the COVID-19 cases detected in Greece each day, and the capacity of public hospitals to deal with the influx of patients is being stretched.

Health authorities have urged private sector doctors to help the public health system.
