Greek Foreign Ministry: Foreign troops must leave Syria immediately

Days after the sombre 10 year anniversary since the beginning of the Syrian War, the Greek Foreign Ministry demanded through a statement that foreign troops should leave the country.

“Greece, which is actively promoting the consolidation of peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean region, with International Law at its base, continues to support efforts to reach a political solution [in Syria],” the Ministry said in a statement.

The Foreign Ministry pointed to UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015) that calls for “the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic.”

The Foreign Ministry highlighted that “achieving this solution requires the immediate withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.”

“Syria must also stop being a battleground for foreign interests acting to the detriment of the country and the Syrian people,” the statement continued.

It is recalled that Russian, Iranian, Turkish and US troops are in Syria, however, the latter two are operating without permission, coordination or cooperation from the Syrian government.

“In this context, Greece continues to fully support the efforts made by the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Syria Geir Pedersen,” the ministry added.

“It is recalled that Greece continues to host thousands of Syrian refugees on its territory, to whom it provides humanitarian and social assistance, raising a particularly important burden for the country’s potential,” the statement concluded.
