According to the President of the Athens and Piraeus Hospital Doctors’ Association (EINAP) Matina Pagoni, 7 out of 10 patients currently being treated for Covid-19 in hospitals around Greece are young.
Speaking on Skai TV, Pagoni said “it is tragic” to have to intubate people aged 35 to 50 who do not have any underlying health problems.
She attributed the increase to the swift spread of the coronavirus variants which show an increased transmissibility of 40-60% among the younger population.
Greece recorded 1,724 new cases of COVID-19 in the latest 24-hour reporting period.
This raises the total number of cases to 255,755.
Seven hundred and thirty-eight individuals are in ICU. Their median age is 68 years. 82.5% have an underlying condition or are aged 70 years and above.
The number of new Covid-19 patients in hospitals in the last 24 hours is 456 (daily change: +8.06%), while the rolling average of hospital admissions in the last seven days is 447 patients.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,677 patients have been discharged from the ICU.
The country’s pandemic death toll stands at 7,945. The median age of all was 79 years and 95.7% of the deceased had an underlying condition and/or age of 70 years or more.
