The Municipality of Athens has deployed teams around the capital city to remove graffiti visible to residents and passengers.
"For many months now, the battle against the smudge that has been blackening large areas of the city for years has begun. Ermou, Stadiou, a large part of Patissia, Anafiotika and dozens of other places, cleaned," Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis posted on Instagram.
"With a special anti-graffiti film that allows us to keep the surfaces clean. But also with spaces that we have for the real art of graffiti and artistic expression. Another 10 neighbourhoods of Athens found their colour again. We are not finished but we do not stop," he added.
You will notice something different the next time you walk down Ermou, the main shopping street in central Athens.
According to the Municipality of Athens, the clean up carried out by special teams last year, was necessary to eliminate the graffiti that covered dozens of surfaces of historic buildings and the walls/shutters of shops.
The workers cleaned a total area of almost 1,700 square meters, from Syntagma to Agion Asomaton.
The effort was particularly arduous as the graffiti had been on the surface for a long period of time.
