Why did Erdoğan arrest the "father" of the Blue Homeland?

Turkish analysts and politicians spoke to Sputnik Hellas about the developments with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's arrest of one of the two main ideologues of the "Blue Homeland" theory to steal Greek maritime space and island.

Turkey can not "breathe" as one major issue unexpectedly follows another, plunging the shaky country into a deeper crisis, starring its always unpredictable President.

This is at a time when the Turkish lira is sinking and the COVID-19 pandemic hits red with cases and deaths (despite fudging the numbers) breaking new records in the country.

After cutting the chief of the Bank of Turkey, a new internal front is opened by Erdoğan who has now arrested the "father" of the "Blue Homeland" theory.

Turkish security forces have issued an arrest warrant for retired Admiral Cem Gürdeniz, considered the mastermind of the "Blue Homeland" doctrine and one of 104 retired admirals who signed a joint statement regarding the Montreux Treaty (1936).

The Montreux Treaty dictates international law regarding the Bosporus and Dardanelle Straits.

Gürdeniz and the 103 other admirals urged the government to not change the Montreux Treaty and to not distance itself from the principles of the secular Kemalist state, implying the infiltration of Islam into the ranks of the Turkish armed forces.

The Erdoğan government, with its neo-Ottoman visions, called the joint statement a "coup."

This has paved the way for crackdowns on the Navy.

Erdoğan's design

"As usual, the ruling AKP is trying to turn away from the dire economic situation and the chaotic domestic agenda," said the former vice-president of the main opposition and personal adviser to the chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Ünal Çeviköz.

This is also confirmed by Turkish analyst N. Özür.

"Some more arrests, as always! "Nothing changes, of course," he commented.

"The statement that was signed and described as a 'coup' may be the alibi that Erdoğan was looking for in order to get rid of some army officers and to extend the investigation to the officers who are still on duty," he added.

"Retired Cem Gürdeniz and 103 retired admirals issued a joint statement at midnight on Saturday, criticising the discussions and the possible withdrawal from the Montreux Convention," the analyst explained.

"The AKP immediately accused them of 'plotting a coup'! "He is ill," said Çeviköz.

"Retired Admirals to strike a coup? Subsequently, 14 of those allegedly the authors of the statement were arrested," he continued.

"Cem Gürdeniz is one of them," the former vice president of the CHP said.

How Greece is affected

Why did Erdoğan arrest the "father" of the Blue Homeland?

"The incident has nothing to do with Turkish foreign policy, and therefore has nothing to do with Greece or Cyprus," said Çeviköz.

Gürdeniz, the star of Turkish military, theorised the "Blue Homeland" in line with the demands of Turkey in the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea in order to become a naval superpower.

This was the publication of the book Mavi Vatan (Blue Homeland).

It is noted that in recent months Gürdeniz said Greece is a “U.S. colony,” and that Greece has a spoiled and irreconcilable attitude.
