With new green uniform, the University Institutions Protection Teams (OPPI) are expected to start their operation at the end of the month.
This is because the recruitment of 1,030 Special Guards, who will staff the so-called "University Police," has not yet been announced.
Thus, in order to start the pilot project of security at universities, the leadership of the Ministry of Civil Protection decided to recruit 200 police officers from the services of the General Police Directorate of Attica.
These 200 police officers will take off their blue uniforms and wear the green ones, according to Sputnik Hellas.
Their equipment will include handcuffs, while it is not yet been decided whether those police officers will also have gloves.
The head of all Attica teams will be an Attica Security officer who until now served in the Sports Violence Prosecution Department.
What has not yet been decided is where these teams will belong when the 1,030 Special Guards are hired.
It is not yet decided whether a directorate will be created at the Headquarters of the Hellenic Police, or whether they will be subordinated to the General Regional Directorates of Police whose jurisdiction includes Universities.
