An Activity of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia
On Sunday 25 April at Cyren Bar Grill Seafood in Harbourside, Darling Harbour, St. Basil’s Homes NSW & ACT hosted their annual Palm Sunday lunch.
Each year, St. Basil’s looks forward to this family event shared with the community, held on Palm Sunday and leading into Holy Week.
St Basil’s Palm Sunday luncheon began in 1975, when the Very Reverend Father John Kapetas, Mary Economos and friends invited the new and very young Archbishop Stylianos to lunch on his first Sunday in Australia, which happened to be Palm Sunday.
Since that first lunch in 1975, this function has been emulated in almost every parish in Australia. This year, more than 400 people with families and friends attended to celebrate the day organised by St. Basil’s.
The event was also attended by a number of officials including His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, The Consul General Mr Christos Karras with the Trade Commissioner Mrs Katia Gkikiza, Mr. James Jordan , Chairman of St. Basil’s Homes NSW & ACT and all the Directors of Board.
His Eminence blessed the attendees and the food on this very special Holy Day of Palm Sunday which marks the entry of Jesus and His disciples into Jerusalem and the beginning of Holy Week.
