Two Greeks win seats in new Albanian parliament

Vangelis Doules Nikos Kouris

There were candidates from the Greek minority in Albania with any serious chance of being elected - Vangelis Doules, Vangelis Tavos and Nikos Kouris - in April's 2021 Albanian parliamentary election.

However, in the end, it was Doules and Kouris who won seats.

This is the first time that Doules has been nominated as a candidate in the Tirana District as his constituency is usually Avlonas (Αυλώνας, Albanian: Vlorë).

Nikos Kouris, a member of the EEMM MEGA party, was elected in Avlonas.

Unfortunately for Tavos, he failed to win a seat in the Argyrokastro (Αργυρόκαστρο, Albanian: Gjirokastër) region.

This parliamentary elections in Albania had the lowest turnout of candidates of Greek origin.

The majority of Greek candidates in the previous election were mostly aligned with the major Albanian parties, even if hostile to minorities.

Himara news portal expressed "their hope that Mr. Kouris will not join this category and will fight for the interest of the Greek minority."
