Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is participating in a summit taking place on May 7-8 in Porto, Portugal.
The summit will focus on the European Union Roadmap for Social Cohesion over the next 10 years, as well as the coordination of EU member-states regarding the green certificate, the vaccination programmes and the vaccine patents.
This is the first summit to be held live since December.
Regarding the issue of a COVID-19 vaccine patents waiver, government sources noted that the issue had already been raised by Mitsotakis in April and May 2020 in order to reduce the gap between developed and developing countries.
The Porto Social Summit focuses on the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights and the Action Plan to accelerate its implementation as presented by the European Commission on March 4.
The goal, as government officials said, is to set the European social policy agenda for the next decade, but also to address the challenges of today and tomorrow so that no one is excluded.
According to the agenda of the summit, a thematic meeting will be held on Friday, followed by the informal working dinner of the European Council in the afternoon.
On Saturday, the informal meeting of EU heads of states and governments will take place, followed by the European Council summit teleconference with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
