Alpha gets Sydney’s CBD buzzing

It's one of Sydney’s great gems when it comes to Greek dining.

It's Alpha... and it has reopened!

Last week, the much loved and popular Greek restaurant located on Castlereagh Street in Sydney's CBD, hosted an intimate 'family and friends' reopening.

In attendance was His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, Hellenic Club Sydney Board of Directors, Hellenic Club Sydney Life Members, family, friends and the media.

After blessing the newly reopened restaurant and the food, Archbishop Makarios explained how the renovation of Alpha expresses the 'Greek idea', Greek culture and at the same time, the 'Orthodox theology'.

"We have two very significant words in our 'Orthodox theology' that I believe expresses the experience that we will have tonight by being here altogether. The first word is 'joy' and we can understand what 'joy' means especially at this time when we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ, which is the biggest celebration for our faith and it is the celebration of 'joy.' The second word is ' beauty'. According to the ascetic theology and philosophy, there is a very significant message- what will be saved by the beauty. So beauty is very essential. And I am very happy tonight because in this place you can see this combination. Joy and Beauty," His Eminence said.

The president of the Hellenic Club Sydney, Mr Nikolas Hatzistergos began his speech by thanking His Eminence Archbishop Makarios for blessing the restaurant and acknowledging the many people that contributed to the project including the builders Mars Industries, the consultants and the Board of Directors.

"Hopefully we will do the membership proud and the Greek community proud, by having a venue that everyone will be proud to be associated with."

Mr Hatzistergos also emphasised that the Hellenic Club was founded on two principles, two Greek words that have no translation - Philotimo and Philoxenia.

"We are very proud to have a meeting place for Australian born Greeks in the city. We want this to be something everyone is very proud of to call their own, because at the end of the day, it belongs to everybody," he concluded.

One of the pioneers of Greek food, Executive chef Peter Conistis, together with head chef James Roberts, cooked up one of the best, mouthwatering feasts.

We aren't going to spoil the menu, as we want you to be surprised and excited when you see the menu for the first time at the newly reopened Alpha.

But, we have to mention some of our favourite dishes, including:

  • Picked Octopus (preserved orange, rigani)
  • Halloumi Saganaki (wild figs, pickled figs, pistachios)
  • Moussaka (eggplant, seared sea scallops, taramasalata)
  • Kleftiko (lamb shoulder baked in clay, piperati, potatoes)
  • Whole Roasted Barramundi (leaves, bulbs, olives)
  • Pork Kontosouvli (cracked potatoes, red wine, coriander)
  • Halloumi Fries (mint, black olives, lemon)
  • Loukomades (black walnut ice cream, thyme, honesy pasteli)
  • White Fig Baklava (almonds, dark chocolate, burnt fig ice cream)

Diners will also be able to enjoy Greek-inspired cocktails, and a selection of Greek wines from the newly constructed bar, situated at the front of the restaurant.
