The Corinth Canal has been closed to maritime traffic since January 2021, due to damage caused by landslides.

Repair work is currently underway, however no date has been given as to when it will be back up and running.

Last month, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Corinth Canal, and stated that full repairs are necessary to ensure the safe passage of ships and pleasure yachts through the channel.

“It is a very important project and we should not forget that it was built in the 19th century and now, in the 21st century, the time has come for the necessary interventions,” Mitsotakis emphasised, adding that repairs will cost €9 million.

The Corinth Canal which joins the Corinth Gulf to the Saronic Gulf, is one of the most important achievements of engineering in Greece, given it was constructed during the period of 1880 to 1893.

It is the work of the Greek engineer Petros Protopapadakis and its length is almost 6.5km and 25 metres wide.

About 15,000 ships per year travel through the waterway.
