A tourist was taken to Volos hospital after she was bitten by a seal in the Alonissos marine park on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old woman from Bulgaria was sailing near the islet of Kyra Panaghia when she saw the seal and tried to get close enough to stroke it.

The seal was alarmed by her approach, however, and attacked her, biting her legs.

She was taken to the Skopelos health centre, which arranged for her transfer to a hospital in Volos.

The wild seals live in a protected area in the island of Alonissos and are usually very friendly with people, making this a very rare incident.
