Large gatherings banned in central Athens over fears of Olympiacos-PAOK fan violence

Greek Police has banned any public outdoor gathering as of 21:00 on Friday (May 21) to 06:00 on Sunday (May 23) in central Athens over concerns of football fan violence before and after the Greek Cup final tonight between PAOK and Olympiacos.

Areas around Omonia Square and Patission and Akadimias Streets are of particularly interest to police.

A notice said that the reason for the ban in the capital city is "due to the serious threat to public security and the threat to serious disruption of social and economic activity."

The final is taking place at the Olympic Stadium of Athens (OAKA) on Saturday at 21:00 (behind closed doors).

Nearly two hundred fans of PAOK from Thessaloniki are expected to make the trip and will gather at the PAOK Sports Association on Menandrou 58 Street.

Police said they were also concerned that fans of other football clubs in Athens will cause serious incidents.
