The fire west of Athens still burns

Satellite imagery from the Athens Oservatory shows that the big fire which broke out Wednesday night, west of Athens, had burned more than 7,000 hectares by Saturday.

Firefighters, still on an emergency footing, are fighting several isolated pockets of fire Sunday.

The Fire Service estimates that 373 houses were partially or totally damaged.

The government has announced financial relief measures for people affected by the fire.

Interior Minister Stelios Petsas who is visiting on Sunday the village of Alepochori accompanied by a government delegation, announced an immediate 600-euros economic support to the fire stricken from the region of Corinth and from western Attica for their first needs and up to 6,000 euros for household appliances, after the first recording of the damages.


In statements after the meeting of the coordinating body, Petsas said that after the social protection financial support provided by the Interior Ministry, a series of financial expenses will follow from the responsible ministries for the flood protection of the stricken areas, the housing contribution, for farming and for the support of the residential areas.
