World renowned barrister Geoffrey Robertson in town to talk Parthenon Sculptures and the ‘ownership’ of history

Sydney-siders will have the opportunity to hear renowned human rights barrister, academic, author and broadcaster Geoffrey Robertson QC present his book ‘Who Owns History? Elgin’s loot and the case for returning plundered treasure’ on Saturday 5 June 2021 at the Governors Centre, Moore Park in Sydney.

The Chairman of the Australian Committee, David Hill, said the book makes a compelling argument for the return of looted cultural artefacts such as the Parthenon sculptures which were taken by Lord Elgin more than 200 years ago.

The book launch marks a significant item in the cultural calendar of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution and the Hellenic Republic with Australians now having the opportunity to hear from a philhellene like Robertson who has long championed the return of these cultural captives of the British Museum.

“Who Owns History” evolved out of a memorandum of advice that Geoffrey Robertson QC, together with lawyer Amal Clooney and the late Professor Norman Palmer, delivered to the Greek Government in 2015 regarding the “Elgin Marbles’’ and how they could be repatriated from the British Museum, an institution described by the author as the “world’s largest receivers of stolen property”.
