Celebrating 50 years since the presence of Panathinaikos FC in the 1971 European Cup Final, Omonia Square fountain lit up in green on Wednesday evening.

The 1971 European Cup Final was played between Ajax and Panathinaikos on 2 June at Wembley Stadium, London.

The Greek team were appearing in their first final.

"Omonia in green, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the epic history written by Greek sports and Panathinaikos at Wembley. For the team that was born in Athens and connected its history with the city," Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis posted on Facebook.

Watched by a crowd of 83,179, Ajax won its first European Cup with the score 2–0.

One of the greatest Greek football midfielders ever, Mimis Domazos stated at the time: "Although we did not lift the Cup, we all felt proud. We had achieved a feat. The name of our country was heard all over the world. May another Greek team achieve this triumph."
