Dutchman brings Santorini to his yard

Since dutchman Fer Geerts couldn't travel to Santorini due to the coronavirus pandemic, he brought the most popular Greek island to his yard!

The sixty-eight year-old created a model inspired by the Cycladic island with its whitewashed houses with blue windows, and placed it in his garden.

So when he sits there with a glass of red wine, he imagines that he is walking through the busy alleys of the Greek island.

And if he closes his eyes, he can imagine the idyllic sunset that has made Santorini world famous.

Geerts who regularly visits Greece since the 1980s, said he would love to travel to his "second home" tomorrow if he could, but the coronavirus crisis has prevented him from doing so.

"We will not risk travelling this year. With a red wine and an umbrella I can have some Greece from here," he told Dutch website omroepbrabant.

The model consists of 22 parts that are joined like a puzzle.

'Santorini' is almost five meters long and two meters wide. Whitewashed houses, sun beds, terraces, window shutters, blue-domed churches, rugged cliffs, cobbled streets, winding paths ... each detail was created with amazing precision.

Geerts says he loves the Greek way of life, the food, the sun and the people.

But his favourite place is the Cyclades, specifically Santorini.

The creative dutchman is counting down the days he will visit Greece and the  Cyclades again. Until then, he will enjoy his own 'Santorini' from his garden.
