Hollywood stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell were among those who attended the exhibition launch of the history of the first Greek flag on the island of Skiathos held at the Holy Monastery of the Annunciation, in the context of events to mark the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution.
The couple joined their daughter Kate Hudson who is on the island with her beau Danny Fujikawa ahead of filming for the Netflix sequel ‘Knives Out 2’.
The launch of the art exhibition entitled "First Flag" was hosted by the Mayor of Skiathos, Theodore Tzouma in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, the Deputy Minister of Education Zetta Makri, the chairman of the Committee "Greece 2021" Gianna Aggelopoulou Daskalaki, the governor of Thessaly Costas Agorastos, the mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas and the Metropolitan of Chalkis, Istiaia and Northern Sporades, Chrysostomos.
The first Greek flag was woven on a traditional loom with very simple materials. The leader of Kleftes from Thessaly Nikotsaras had taken refuge in Skiathos and together with the famous captain Giannis Stathas, used the island as a base for their pirate flotilla.
The two of them in secret with the first Abbot of the Monastery, Saint Abbot Niphon designed, wove and raised the first Greek flag with the blue background and the white cross, the Pelagic flag with the simple harmony of the sky and the sea. This prototype, an emotional improvised symbol, was blessed in September 1807, in a ceremony attended by Theodoros Kolokotronis.
