Athens Airport: Congolese national arrested for allegedly raping his child in Belgium

Police at Athens "Eleftherios Venezilos" Airport arrested a man who was wanted by Belgian police, President of the Union of Police Officers of Southeast Attica, Georgios Kalliakmanis, told Proto Thema.

The Congolese national was wanted by Belgium for allegedly raping his minor child.

The 41-year-old Congolese, with a legal residence permit in Belgium, tried to fly to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines flight TK1844.

However, he was arrested by Greek police and taken to the Security Detention Center and is in the process of being extradited to Belgium.

He claimed that he was in Greece for eight days and would go to Istanbul for shopping and then return to Belgium.

However, police believe that he was lying and that he had recently arrived.

Kalliakmanis emphasised that "Airport authorities are constantly on alert in cooperation with Europol and Interpol in order to immediately arrest those who try to leave through Eleftherios Venizelos."
