Greek police have arrested three men in Kilkis on Sunday as they attempted to sell an ancient statuette for an estimated 40,000 euros.

The arrest was the result of an organised police operation which revealed that the men had received the ancient statuette the previous day from a 35-year-old in the area of Pella, in order to proceed with the purchase and sale, who was also located and arrested.

The arrested men, two 56-year-olds and a 35-year-old, were taken to appear before a prosecutor in Thessaloniki.

Following an archaeological assessment, the statuette is that of the mythological Greek deity  Trimorfi Ekati and dates to the 2nd - 3rd century AD.
