President Sakellaropoulou commemorates Independence War heroes in Hydra

President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou visited the island of Hydra on the weekend for the "Miaouleia 2021" anniversary events that are held each year.

She noted that 200 years after the Revolution of 1821, Hydra "preserves its patriotic tradition in fine shape and transfers the wealth of the past intact to the future."

Sakellaropoulou arrived on Hydra on Saturday and watched a re-enactment of the Naval Battle of Gerontas that night.

On Sunday she attended a mass at the island's cathedral and laid a wreath at the statue of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, a hero of the 1821 Revolution against the rule of the Ottoman Turks.

The president was then shown around Hydra's museum and Historical Archive and concluded her visit by throwing a wreath into the sea to commemorate those who fought in the naval battle of 1821.
