Roger Federer downs Richard Gasquet, Nick Kyrgios beats Gianluca Mager to reach 3rd round

Eight-time former champion Roger Federer moved up through the gears on Thursday as he became the oldest player in 46 years to reach the third round of The Championships.

The sixth-seeded Swiss recorded his 19th victory in 21 matches against Richard Gasquet of France 7-6(1), 6-1, 6-4 on Centre Court over one hour and 51 minutes.

Nick Kyrgios was unstoppable as continued his Wimbledon campaign on Thursday with a confident 7-6(7), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gianluca Mager to charge into the thir round.

"[Winning] the first set was huge. I reckon he went out there with a game style knowing, 'If I play my normal game style, I'm going to get crushed,'" Kyrgios said. "So he played a game style where he didn't even let me get into rallies much. He was serving big on first and second, trying to get the first strike in whenever he could. He was hitting massive off both sides.

"I finally just levelled myself. I even prepared myself. I said, 'If I lose this first set, I'm not doing anything wrong.' Mentally, I was like, 'I'm just going to continue to go out there, keep serving. I'll get my chance.'"

Kyrgios, who reached the quarter-finals in his Wimbledon debut in 2014, awaits 16th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in Round 3.

Nick Kygrios and the Olympics

Post match the Greek Australian was quizzed on his entry at Tokyo Olympics next month and the ATP tour in Atlanta.

“Ever since I was a player I wanted to compete at the Olympics but I’ve also entered Atlanta as well. I’m tossing up my options at the same time,” Kyrgios revealed.
“Whether or not – I’ve heard some things about the Olympics that are very tough, restrictions wise. No guests, none of that stuff.

“Not having the outside noise and having [former Australian Olympic team Chef de Mission] Kitty Chiller tell me I don’t deserve to be there when I was No. 13 in the world – I mean, it was laughable.

“I went back and forth and I was younger back then and it got a bit personal. But it’s good not to have that outside noise.

“If I choose to play, it’s good that I feel like I’m part of the group and I’m more embraced now. We have a strong team but I’m just trying to get through (Wimbledon). I have a lot on my plate.”
