WHO warns of a new pandemic wave for Europe due to Delta mutation

WHO

The World Health Organisation has warned that although a 10-week period of declining covid-19 cases in Europe has come to an end, a new wave of infections is imminent if citizens and politicians do not remain disciplined.

Dr Hans Klüg, WHO Regional Director for Europe issued the warning yesterday via a video announcement noting that the number of new cases of Covid-19 increased by 10%, mainly due to travel, rallies and easing of measures.

“This is happening in the context of a rapidly evolving situation: A new strain of concern - the mutated Delta strain - and an area where, despite the tremendous efforts of states, millions of people remain unvaccinated against Covid-19," he added. "There will be a new wave in the region of Europe if we do not remain disciplined," he concluded.
