Venus Williams and Nick Kyrgios got their Wimbledon mixed doubles campaign underway with a win on Friday.
The American-Australian duo beat Austin Krajicek and Sabrina Santamaria 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Nick Kyrgios talked about his doubles partnership with Venus Williams in his post-match press conference:
“I want to experience playing with one of the Williams sisters in mixed doubles… That’s like a dream come true for me.”
“I just wanted to, not put on a good showing or anything, I really wanted to win,” Kyrgios said. “Like, I’ve never really wanted to win a mixed doubles or a doubles match that much before. I was really trying hard.”
After the match, Kyrgios posted a picture of the two walking onto court, tagging it with the single word: “Iconic”.
Up next, fourth seeds Nicole Melichar and Edouard Roger-Vasselin for the doubles pair.
Williams is out of the women’s singles, but Kyrgios will have to back up against Felix Auger-Aliassime on Saturday.
