PANDEMIC: The global rise and fall of the virus spread in numbers

The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated this week in most parts of the world except for Latin America with India and Brazil leading to death count, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Following the case in numbers from AFP which records the most important weekly developments, based on a database it maintains.

Less than 400,000 daily cases
With 377,000 infections reported daily worldwide this week, the index is up slightly (+ 2% compared to last week), according to an AFP report, until yesterday. The index is showing an acceleration of the virus for the first time since the end of April, when it had reached its record (816,800 new cases per day).

Worsening scenario everywhere
This week alone, in Latin America / Caribbean, the situation has improved, with 13% fewer cases than last week. The pandemic accelerated in all other regions: + 30% in Europe, + 25% in Africa, + 10% in the Middle East, + 5% in the US-Canada, + 4% in Asia. In Oceania, cases also accelerated, by 31%, but the coronavirus is circulating there in small numbers (323 cases per day).

The biggest increases
Myanmar is the one country where the epidemic accelerated the most (+ 119%, 1,200 new cases per day), among those who recorded at least 1,000 daily infections last week.
They are followed by Spain (+ 80%, 6,300), Britain (+ 71%, 20,600), Tunisia (+ 69%, 4,500) and Cuba (+ 68%, 2,700).

The biggest decreases
In contrast, Uruguay recorded the largest decrease this week (-35%, 1,200 new cases per day), ahead of Uganda (-34%, 800), Brazil (-30%, 54,100), Chile (-21%, 3,800) and the Dominican Republic (-17%, 900).

The most infections
Despite the strong slowdown (-30%), Brazil remains the country with the highest number of new infections in absolute numbers this week (54,100 daily cases), ahead of India (47,000, -14%) and Colombia ( 29,900, + 5%).

In terms of population, the country with the highest number of new cases this week is the Seychelles archipelago (975 per 100,000 inhabitants), ahead of Mongolia (468).

These two countries are, however, among those that precede in terms of vaccination, with 68% and 53% of their inhabitants respectively having been fully vaccinated.

Seychelles uses Sinopharm and AstraZeneca / Oxford vaccines, while Mongolia mainly uses Sinopharm doses.

Deaths
As might be expected, Brazil and India rank first in daily deaths, with 1,565 and 1,068 dead respectively this week. Internationally, daily deaths fell this week (7,958 daily, -5%).
