Professor Sarigiannis: If vaccinations do not increase we can reach 18,000 COVID-19 cases a day

Speaking to ANT1, Professor Demosthenes Sarigiannis of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki warned that if only 53% of the population has been vaccinated in September, then daily COVID-19 cases could reach as high as 18,000 per day.

However, he pointed out that if the vaccinations increase speed and reach 65% of the population to build the immunity wall, there will again be a difficult period with increased cases, but not the inconceivable heights that he described.

The only solution for him so that such an outbreak does not occur are for people to be vaccinated.

"In order to reduce cases, the only way is vaccination," Sarigiannis pointed out, adding that protection measures should be observed and self-tests should be carried out for the best monitoring of the spread.

The average age of those being infected with COVID-19 is very low.

He highlighted though that there was a 200% increase of COVID-19 bacteria found in sewage samples.

Professor Sarigiannis also expressed his favour for compulsory vaccinations to sanitary workers, nursing home staff and teachers.
