Greece: 2,562 new coronavirus cases, 7 deaths; Mykonos Restrictions

Greece’s health authorities announced on Saturday 2,562 new coronavirus cases and 7 Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospitals Intensive Care Units stands at 124.

Three young women, all unvaccinated are hospitalized in Thessaloniki. One of them, a 33-year-old was in her 6th month of pregnancy, has been intubated.

The number of Rapid tests has reached new record as it is now a requirement for traveling to Greek islands if passengers are not vaccinated.The Hellenic port authority is doing thorough checks before entry is allowed onto the ferry.

Greek authorities have also imposed a night curfew on the popular destination, the island of Mykonos, on Saturday due to a coronavirus outbreak. The decision triggered the outrage of the local community, which was gearing up for its biggest season due to covid.

Greece depends on tourism for a fifth of its economy and needs a strong season this year following a disastrous 2020 when visitor numbers and revenues collapsed.
