People smugglers arrested after car overturns in police escape attempt 1

Greek police disrupted people smuggling operations in two separate incidents over the weekend with multiple arrests of foreign nationals in the prefectures of Rodopi and Evros according to Alexandroupolis police.

In the first instance, on Saturday morning, police stopped a foreign national following a traffic accident on the provincial road Gratini – Stylariou Rodopi. Upon investigation police discovered all passengers were foreign nationals without legal documentation and proceeded to arrest the driver and charged him for human trafficking.

The driver had initially disobeyed a police traffic stop, developed speed and eventually collided with a passing vehicle and overturned on a plot of land, without any injuries.

In the second case on Saturday, in the coastal area of Aristinos Evros, Greek Border  officers arrested a second foreign national after finding him transporting three illegal immigrants hidden in a wooden boat

A car, the boat with the outboard engine and a sum of money were confiscated.
