An estimated 70% of the EU adult population has already received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, hailing it as a successful achievement and noting that 57% of adults had been fully vaccinated.
"Our goal was to protect 70% of adults in the European Union with at least one vaccine dose in July. Today we have achieved that goal. And 57% of adults already have full protection against double vaccination. These figures place Europe in a leading position globally. Our prevention strategy has been very successful - but we must keep trying. The Delta variant is very dangerous, so I call on all those who have the opportunity to be vaccinated to do so for their own health and for the protection of others. We will continue to provide a sufficient quantity of vaccines ", added the Commission President.
Meanwhile EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakidou noted that "this is a key milestone in our work against the pandemic, but we can not stop here.
"We will continue to work with Member States to ensure that citizens can be vaccinated quickly."
