Dendias: We are concerned about the destabilising role of Turkey

"We are concerned about the destabilizing role of neighboring Turkey," Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Friday after his meeting with the Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense Zeina Akar.

The Foreign Minister referred to Turkey's illegal announcements about Varosha, which "are the latest expression of Turkish delinquency in our region, contrary to the decisions of the United Nations Security Council."

"It is becoming clear now that Turkey is using every tool of destabilization," he said, noting that Lebanon is a short distance from Famagusta.

"In the destabilization efforts, we oppose our stance in accordance with international law and good neighborly relations. UNCLOS, which Greece and Lebanon have ratified, is also of great importance", the Greek Foreign Minister noted.

"For Greece, the stability and cohesion of Lebanon is a key priority," he said. "Lebanon is a gateway, a neighboring country, part of our immediate neighborhood. Any further destabilization will have negative consequences for our country and the EU," Dendias said and added: "We will also support Lebanon within the EU."

The Foreign Minister expressed the hope that the challenges will be addressed as soon as possible, both inside and outside the country.

"We would like to see the formation of a stable government, which will take the necessary measures to accept the available foreign aid and will lead to elections in Lebanon in 2020-2022," he noted.
