OTD in 901: Aghlabid Arabs complete conquest of Byzantine Sicily

Aghlabid islamic conquest of sicily

On this day, we commemorate the fall of our beloved Sicily to the Aghlabid Arabs.

On August 1st, 902 A.D., the Arabs captured the last Byzantine-Greek stronghold at Comune di Taormina (Ταυρομένιον).

In the aftermath, the city lay in ruins, and the indigenous Greek [Siceliot] inhabitants massacred.

Today, we honor the memory of all the innocent victims of Taurmina. May their memory be eternal!
