Putin's message to Turkey: Violating UN resolutions on Cyprus is unacceptable

Unilateral actions in the occupied city of Famagusta in northern Cyprus which violate UN Security Council resolutions are unacceptable, Russian President Vladimir Putin said to the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis.

According to the Cypriot Presidency, in his reply letter to Anastasiadis, Putin noted that "I have carefully read your letter, dated May 14, 2021, which followed the informal meeting, 5 + UN in Geneva on April 27-29, 2021, and the message of 5 July 2021, expressing concern about a possible change in the status quo in Varoshia and the risks involved in achieving a comprehensive, sustainable and just solution to the Cyprus issue."

The President of the Russian Federation emphasised that Russia "considers it the unilateral actions that violate UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789 as unacceptable."

Putin also pointed out that "the Russian Federation consistently supports a solution to the Cyprus problem, within the well-known framework of international law set by the decisions of the Security Council and provides for a solution of a bi-zonal bi-communal federation."

He also stressed that both at the UN level and in its bilateral contacts, Russia would promote the creation of favorable external conditions, with the aim of making progress in resolving the Cyprus issue through negotiations.

It also notes that Russia strongly believes that there is a need for all five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council to be involved in the discussion on finding a solution for Cyprus.

Finally, in his letter, Putin expressed his gratitude to the Cypriot President for dialogue between the two countries on various issues of international and regional agenda, including the situation in Cyprus, but also Cypriot-Russian cooperation.
