Fires under control on the island of Rhodes says Governor

The fires that broke out on Sunday and destroyed some 10,000 acres on the island of Rhodes have now been put under control as of last night declared South Aegean Governor, Mr. George Hatzimarkos.

Firefighters and volunteers remained on site allĀ  night to deal with the fires, while today increased vigilance continues throughout the island, due to the high risk of new fires.

"There is no active fire front on the island of Rhodes" and "the fire that broke out in Kos is under control", stressed the Governor.

Mr. Hatzimarkos added that at the meeting of the Coordinating Body for Civil Protection, which took place in Rhodes, "we were more concerned with a potential category 5 fire risk classification for the island.
