The President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou contacted the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Lieutenant General Stefanos Kolokouri yesterday, who was on the frontline of Ilia, and expressed her gratitude on behalf of the country for the enormous and heroic effort made by firefighters, volunteers and those who selflessly give battle during these difficult hours for the country, trying to save and protect people, lives, property, forests and animals.
Mrs. Sakellaropoulou wished the catastrophic fires to be brought under full control soon.
Expressions of support have come in from many foreign leaders with US Senator Robert Menendez adding his voice as well in his recent social media post where he calls on the US to help Greece in these trying times.
"We pray for the health and safety of our friends throughout Greece and Southern Europe" due to the ongoing heavy heat and raging fires, said the Senator in a message via Twitter.
Menendez who is the chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stressed that "the United States must provide support and assistance as we monitor the devastating effects of climate change."
