Greece's tennis star Maria Sakkari, currently ranked No. 18 in the world, will face No. 33 Veronika Kudermetova in the 2nd round of the Rogers Cup, today (11/8) noon, Athens time.
Kudermetova prevailed over Yulia Putintseva and qualified in the points, with a score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Sakkari and Kudermetova have been rivals once in the past, in the first round of the Istanbul Open, in 2019, with the Russian emerging as the winner.
Maria Sakkari qualified on Monday (9/8) in the second round, with her opponent Marie Buzkova, retiring, as she felt dizzy and was not able to continue the match. Sakkari was ahead with a set and a break, when the 23 year old Czech was forced to leave.
After an hour and a half of fighting, Sakkari prevailed over the No. 74 tennis player 6-4, 3-1 and celebrated her first victory in the main draw of the Canadian event.
